The hikeable area at 900 meters above sea level is characterized by dense forests, mystical moors and granite formations.
Altmelon is located near the district capital Zwettl, known as a gourmet and shopping town, city wall town and brewing town and known for its historical heritage. Well-known sights include Zwettl Abbey, the Zwettl private brewery and the Lichtenfels castle ruins.
